One player told the Times last summer that Griffey erroneously believed that Wakamatsu had been the source of the Sleep Gate story in which the future Hall of Famer was said to be napping in the clubhouse during a game in May.

The player said Griffey shared his opinion with others on the team and only realized weeks later -- after he'd already retired -- that Wakamatsu was not the story's source. But today, Griffey merely says he wasn't upset at the time and left because he feared he'd become a distraction to the team.

Griffey was asked what he has to say to fans disappointed by his abrupt departure.

"You want me to apologize for something that I felt was right? I felt that it was right for me to leave. I'm not going to do it. Because it's not intended to hurt people. It was a decision that I made. I made that 15 years ago...there are some people who are upset and some people who are not. I can't worry about it. I had to do what I thought was right for me.''

Griffey had indeed spoken for a long time of retiring without fanfare or a press conference. Again, though, one wonders why -- if he insists he left with no ill feelings and had simply planned to leave this way all along -- he didn't extend his manager or general manager the courtesy of a phone call. Griffey said it will be hard for the organization and those who met Niehaus up-close to get over his death from a heart attack last November at age 73. He was asked whether it will be odd not having Niehaus around on Opening Day.

"Yeah, it's odd,'' he said. "If somebody tells you it isn't, it is. Definitely, looking around and not seeing those white shoes, those tight pants he wears and that semi-tight shirt. And that voice. I think that's the biggest thing. That voice saying hello to you, teasing you, having a good time at the ballpark.

"This is the organization I grew up in,'' he said. "So, if there's going to be an opportunity for me to be in baseball, it's going to be here. I had an opportunity to get a chance to do it. It's a lot of learning because it's a little different. It's not going to change. I'm still going to be the same person. You're going to know how I feel.''

And what's his main message going to be?

"Hard work doesn't start during the game,'' he said. "Hard work starts the night before.''

Regardless of what happened last year -- and several good people did lose jobs because of the events of 2010 -- the organziation has to try to put it in the rear-view mirror. It will take time for some to forgive Griffey. And some fans may never do that. That's their choice.

"No,'' he said. "I mean, things happen. Through no fault of its own, things happen. I got to meet some great people last year. If I wouldn't have done it, I wouldn't have had an opportunity to meet some of the people in Seattle that I did meet...and who still call me today. So, no, I'm not sorry that I came back.''

It may take time for some to get the appreciation back that many fans felt in 2009. And some may never get it back. But the team had to try.

Griffey came today and offered his explanation. It may be enough for some, not enough for others, but it's a start. And it's as good as it's going to get.

Bo Jackson's 300-mile bike ride across Alabama ended Saturday in Tuscaloosa, with the Heisman Trophy winner having raised more than $413,000 so far to help victims of last spring's tornado outbreaks.

Todd Stacy of the Alabama House Speaker's staff said Saturday evening that donations were still coming in for the Governor's Emergency Relief Fund, which was set up to help tornado victims. Jackson had set a goal of raising $1 million.

Jackson told a gathering in Tuscaloosa that he was inspired by the optimism of people he encountered along the ride, people who in many cases had lost a lot.

"We've had fun this week," Jackson said "I've gotten to know people that I would have never gotten to know. And it's things like when you're driving down the road, even though these people have lost a lot, they're out on their front porches. They're out beside the streets and they're waving. And they're happy."

Jackson, who grew up near Birmingham in Bessemer but now lives in Illinois, laughed as he recalled the driver of an 18-wheeler pulling up beside him and saying, "Roll, Bo, roll."

Pedaling past tornado-tossed homes and broken trees, Heisman Trophy winner Bo Jackson and about 100 bicyclists started a five-day, 300-mile bike trek across north Alabama on Tuesday to raise money for storm relief in the state.

The ride will include several celebrities, including former Major League Baseball player Ken Griffey Jr., seven-time Tour De France winner Lance Armstrong, NBA star Scottie Pippen and downhill skier Picabo Street.

"They say there's a couple of areas we're gonna pass through that look somebody took a weed whacker and just took out a hundred yards or so," said Griffey, who has never seen tornado destruction up close.

A crowd of about 200 people cheered "Go Bo, Go," as the ride began in tiny Henagar, located in northeast Alabama's DeKalb County, where more than 30 people were killed. Before going to the starting line, Jackson met privately with 11-year-old Bryce Ferguson, whose parents and little sister Emma were among the dead.

"Everybody asks me why I decided to do this ride. It's because of people like Bryce," Jackson said. "He lost everything, but he is standing tall. He is going on with his life, and he's got people in his life that care about him and are loving him."

Jackson rode a specially made bike painted orange and blue, the colors of his alma mater, Auburn University. It also bears the name of every person who died in the twisters.

The storms left a path of destruction that, all put together, stretched 1,000 miles long and 20 miles wide. The ride ends Saturday in Tuscaloosa, where more than 50 deaths were blamed on a tornado.

Riders got a glimpse of the way twisters hop-scotched across the state a year ago, passing from unaffected neighborhoods into zones that looked like logging crews had cut down every tree and left bare, scarred dirt.

The group passed a splintered green house that doesn't appear to have been touched since the twister yanked it from its foundation; riders pedaled past the roofless remains of a country store. Speeding down a hill, riders came within yards of an old yellow milk truck that has been buried in a hillside to serve as a tornado shelter.

Jackson, who grew up near Birmingham in Bessemer but now lives in Illinois, said he hopes to raise $1 million for the governor's relief fund and increase awareness about the continuing problems caused by the twisters. Gov. Robert Bentley said the state still has some $140 million in unmet needs.

Organizers will auction off five different bicycles Jackson plans to ride during the event, and individuals can ride along for a donation of $200.

Bicyclist John Maples, who rode with two friends on the first leg, said the region needs a boost like "Bo Bikes Bama."

"It means a lot to me. We had a lot of people affected," said Maples. "It's great. It's appreciated."

Shannon Pruett, a fan of Auburn, where Jackson won the Heisman in 1985, kept her three children out of school to stand along the roadside and cheer the riders as they passed a road still lined with tornado debris and twisted, splintered trees.
